Panama Canal Increases Daily Transits to 33 as Rainfall Improves

The Panama Canal increased daily transit slots to 33 from October 15th, up from 32 previously. The increase followed improved rainfall conditions and forecast water levels  in Gatun Lake after a period of reduced precipitation associated with El Niño. This prompted the Canal to impose transit restrictions.

The total of 33 slots was reached by adding one booking slot through the Neopanamax Locks from 9 to 10, while keeping Panamax transits at 23 per day. The total remains below the Canal’s usual average of 36.

Increase of the Maximum Draft at the Neopanamax Locks

The ACP has also increased the maximum permitted draft for vessels using the Neopanamax Locks to 14.94 meters (49.0 feet), effective immediately and until further notice. The adjustment was communicated to shipping companies on September 28.

The Canal is experiencing renewed water shortages, prompting its first reductions in transit capacity and draft limits since 2023. During that year’s El Niño-related drought, similar restrictions were introduced, reducing daily transits to 22 vessels in November.
