Tocumen Airport Breaks Record, Plans Investments to Sustain Growth

Tocumen International Airport ✈️ closed 2025 with a record of almost 21 million passengers, a 9% increase compared to 2024. Freight activity also reached a new peak at 248,455 metric tons (+15%).

Projections for 2026 point to continued growth, with passenger volumes potentially climbing to 22.6 million. With a total of $315 million, annual revenue was up 7% in 2025 and forecasted to reach between US$334 million and US$356 million in 2026.

These results & projections were presented by Jose Ruiz Blanco, general manager of ‌Aeropuerto Internacional de Tocumen, at a joint press briefing with international media last month. According to Ruiz Blanco the figures reflect sustained confidence among airlines, logistics providers, and investors in Panama as a strategic aviation and logistics hub.

A Key Year for the Start of Strategic Investments

2026 will mark the start of priority investments aimed at further growth and preserving the airport’s competitive position in the region.

Planned investments include rehabilitation of runways and taxiways, a $56.9 million project awarded to Portuguese–Costa Rican PYRCAT consortium led by Mota- Engil 🇵🇹. Other projects are the deployment of biometric and automated systems, the expansion of Terminal 2 with 10 new boarding gates, cargo-sector expansion (e.g for ‌DHL) and continued upgrades to passenger services.

He also highlighted the Tocumen Master Plan 2030–2050, which outlines long-term development aligned with safety, sustainability, climate resilience, and national urban-logistics planning.

These developments mean opportunities for European companies active in e.g. airport engineering and construction and IT systems.

Tocumen International Airport

With 166,448 air operations in 2025, Tocumen is the busiest airport in Central America and is a key regional connectivity hub with 97 international destinations served by 17 passenger and 28 cargo airlines. It is the home base of Panama’s flag carrier ‌Copa Airlines and the airport has direct connections to Europe with ‌Air France-KLM to Amsterdam & Paris, Iberia and Air Europe to Madrid and Condor to Frankfurt.
