Rio Indio Update: Conceptual Design Advances, Tender Planned for Q4 2026

The 1.6 billion Río Indio project💧is advancing as planned, with the tender expected to be launched between late 2026 & early 2027 under a design-build model. Major construction by the winning contractor would start in early 2028.

In an interview with TVN, Panama Canal Deputy Administrator Ilya Espino de Marotta noted that geological studies are currently being conducted, in conjunction with the consulting firm Ingetec 🇨🇴, alongside the preparation of environmental studies and the development of a social compensation framework.

These efforts form part of the conceptual design phase, which is expected to reach approximately 35% completion prior to the launch of the tender.

Preparatory activities

Ahead of the dam’s formal construction phase, preparatory activities are anticipated throughout 2027. These include setting up on-site camps, developing access infrastructure, and organizing the logistical framework required to support project implementation.

About the Rio Indio Project

The Indio River project to construct a new water reservoir of 4,600 hectares, includes the construction of a large dam, a spillway, outlet facilities saddle dams and a water transfer system via a tunnel (8 km.) and all structures and facilities. It’s a key strategic project for guaranteeing water security and sustaining the operations of the Panama Canal. Estimated cost $1.6 B.
