Container movements in Panamanian ports were up by 1.7% in the first half of 2025, according to data from Panama’s Maritime Authority (AMP). A total of 4.83 million TEU (20-foot containers) were moved, 78,686 thousand units more compared to the same period last year.
Five of the six container terminals of Panama’s National Port System saw increases in movements in the first half of 2025, except SSA Marine MIT (-6.2%). Panama Ports Company (PPC) – Cristobal experienced the largest rise, with 11.5% (from 564,044 to 629,143 TEU). PPC – Balboa came next with an increase of 5% (from 1.24 to 1.30 million TEU), followed by Colon Container Terminal (CCT) with 2.5% (from 799,074 to 819,274 TEU).
The port that moved the most containers in the first half of 2025 was SSA Marine MIT with 1.31 million TEU, closely followed by PPC – Balboa with 1.30 million TEU. Each are good for approximately 27% of total container traffic of the first half year of 2025 (54% combined).
The modest increase in container movements is mainly due to a rise in transshipment cargo with 1.2%, comprising over 89% of total for H1. Other destinations are the local market (10% of total, up 5.7%) and free zone (the rest).
