llya Espino de Marotta Takes Office as Panama Canal Administrator

Engineer Ilya Espino de Marotta officially took office today as Administrator of the Panama Canal for the period 2026–2033. The handover ceremony marked a planned transition in leadership and the start of a new administration. With over 40 years of experience at the institution, Espino de Marotta is the first woman to lead the Panama Canal.

The inauguration took place at the Panama Canal Administration Building, with attendees including Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino, Minister for Canal Affairs and Board Chairman José Ramón Icaza, fellow board members, outgoing Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, government representatives and Canal personnel

Her appointment follows an extensive career across the Canal’s technical, operational and management divisions. She joined the institution in 1985 as a marine engineer, becoming the only woman working as an engineer at the shipyard of the then-Industrial Division. Her subsequent roles included positions in the Dredging Division’s Engineering Section, the Engineering Division’s Mechanical Engineering Section and the Accounting Division, where she worked as a valuation engineer. She later coordinated the Maritime Operations Department’s Investment Program and participated in the Canal Master Plan Coordination Team. Other positions included assignments in the Program Development Office and executive management responsibilities for Resource Administration and Project Controls.

Involvement in the Panama Canal Expansion Program

As Executive Vice President for Engineering and Program Management, she was closely involved in delivering the Panama Canal Expansion Program, one of the largest engineering and management projects ever undertaken in Panama. After its completion, she became Vice President for Operations before being named Deputy Administrator in 2019, a position she formally assumed on January 1, 2020. In January 2024, she took on the newly established role of Chief Sustainability Officer, becoming the first person to hold that position at the Canal.

Overseeing the Canal’s Strategic Vision 2022-2035 & Main Projects

In her new position, Espino de Marotta will oversee the execution of the Panama Canal’s 2025–2035 Strategic Vision. The strategy focuses on securing long-term water availability, improving operational reliability and resilience, broadening the Canal’s service portfolio and reinforcing Panama’s role as an international hub for logistics, maritime activities and energy.

Among the main projects are the proposed Río Indio reservoir, additional port terminals on both the Atlantic and Pacific sides, an energy corridor and a logistics corridor. These investments aim to enhance the Canal’s capacity and diversify its income streams while improving the route’s competitiveness and generating greater economic benefits for Panama.
